Who is the most important brand? You: the brand with your name on it! What is the most important business plan? Your life: which includes your family, your work, your profession, your dreams and goals. Why not use proven business and marketing principles to make brand YOU be the leading brand in your field!

In 2009, I noted the 12 principles from the 2005 book: “A Marketing Plan for Life: 12 Essential Business Principles to Create Meaning, Happiness, and True Success by Robert Michael Fried.

  1. Define Business- Who Am I?
  2. Assess Market- Capitalize on Strength
  3. Identify Primary Target Market- Discovering Real Me
  4. Launch Strategy- Find Niche & Risk
  5. Weather Product Life Cycle (PLC) – Innovate Continuously
  6. Balance Mix- Build My Brand
  7. Expand Reach- Create My Legacy
  8. Campaign Ad- Reawaken Creativity
  9. Plan Distribution- Share Time & Energy
  10. Achieve Sales- Reaching Goals
  11. Analyze Profit and Loss- Keep Score
  12. Seek Opportunities- Make Dreams Real

I purchased the book from Amazon in 2009. I wanted to review the book and get more details but was unable to find the physical copy in 2023.

In the absence of a physical copy, I turned to Chat GPT v3.5 (as of Apr. 12 2023) for what the 12 steps mean. The results were similar but not exactly the same as the list above. The 2023 version seems to be updated to reflect the technological developments that have affected all types of marketing. Here is a comparison of the 2009 from the physical copy and the 2023 info. To make it easy to find the similarties and differences, I highlighted in yellow those principles where there is a major difference between the 2 time frames.

Starting 2023, I have required students to create a short 2 to 4 slide powerpoint with voiceover, transformed to video (mp4) format using the 12 steps. Students can follow either the 2009 or 2023 principles list.

This Marketing for Life template of Robert Michael Fried is a major part of a 20 year  personal marketing plan that will contain among other things: vision/ mission; business portfolio, strategies and tactics and the short and long term goals. The marketing we learn in class is business AND personal.

Here is an 8 minute live video recording for v96 Class (July 2023). Less detailed than above, but may be sufficient for most…

There is no e-book available. But in the above references, this is the accompanying overview/ review…

“This is the book for those who are sick of defining their net worth by their financial portfolio alone. Those who are successful at work, but stressed and unhappy with life outside the office. And those who, after years spent focusing on a career, have lost sight of what’s really important.

Using the same strategies that result in good business, readers can redefine what they really want-and turn their lives into their most successful business venture yet. Fortune 500 marketing executive Robert Fried shows how the skills and principles that facilitate professional success can help us reach our personal goals, too-and explains how to create a “marketing plan” for one’s own life. Fried explains how to:

– Identify the target customer to discover the “Authentic” Self
– Define the business one is in to figure out what one wants to achieve
– Assess the market to capitalize on strengths
– Weather the product cycles to reinvent self at every stage
– Create targets of opportunity to make dreams a reality
– Expand reach to create a lasting legacy”
